Simple, Wholesome Italian Fare at Gusto Napoli

It’s the weekend! Time for a date night with my husband and also to check out some new restaurants in the East. We decided on Gusto Napoli as we heard some positive reviews of the restaurant.

Located in a quaint shophouse along Joo Chiat Road, Gusto Napoli is the perfect venue for a night out with your family or loved ones. This one year old restaurant is helmed by chef-owner Justin Seah, who was formerly from the Garibaldi Group. Robust, rustic and wholesome cuisine coupled with unpretentious interior and warm service make Gusto Napoli the restaurant of choice for many diners. The menu is not very extensive, however the culinary team has a knack for creating dishes with the right harmony and balance.

Minestrone Soup

We started the meal with the wholesome minestrone soup ($6.50+) which brimmed with healthy ingredients such as celery, carrots, potatoes and tomatoes. The soup was flavourful and quite different from the usual minestrone soup which is clear and has a strong tomato taste. Chef Justin’s version oozed the natural sweetness of vegetables and every mouthful was gratifying. Another classic creation was the melanzane parmigiana (eggplant parmigiana -$7.50+)  which was rich, creamy and simply delicious.

Scialatielli ai frutti di mare

For the main course, I had the scialatielli ai frutti di mare (scialatielli pasta with seafood - $20) while my husband had the Porcini mushroom risotto. Scialatelli originates from the Amalfi region in Italy. Chef Justin dexterously prepared this classic dish using lobster broth and enhanced the taste with pecorino and basil. The portion was quite substantial with generous servings of slipper lobster, clam, squid and scallop. The execution was faultless and every bite was immensely satisfying.

Ristotto porcini

The risotto porcini (Italian rice dish with porcini mushroom - $21+) was equally tantalising. The creamy cheese sauce had an intense flavour, permeating our taste buds.

Fondente al cioccolato

We ended our meal on a delightful note with the fondente al cioccolato (chocolate lava cake- $12+). The berry compote on the side gave it the cake a slightly tangy, refreshing flavour and helped to cleanse our palates after a lovely meal.

Gusto Napoli is located at 328 Joo Chiat Road, #01-01. It is open for dinner from 6pm to 9.30pm from Mondays to Fridays and 6pm to 10pm on Saturdays and Sundays. The restaurant is closed during lunch on weekdays and opens from 12pm to 2pm for lunch on Saturdays and Sundays.
