Chill out with Delicious Italian and American Food at Mezza on Nine

The bar counter

Nestled in the hip Siglap enclave, Mezza on Nine is a cool and trendy restaurant and bar that prides itself on modern Italian and American cuisine.  Another gem in the East, the restaurant was established in March 2013 by restaurateur, Indra Kurniawan and helmed by Head Chef, Aloysius Lim. Indra and Aloysius have come a long way together and were former colleagues working in the kitchens of the Pan Pacific Singapore Hotel, Oriental Hotel Singapore, Mondo Mio at Robertson Quay and Spizzico.  Their passion for cooking has led them to start Mezza on Nine, offering tantalising food in a stylish, casual setting. The restaurant is aptly named Mezza on Nine as it is located along 9 Upper East Coast Road.

The alfresco area

The ambience was excellent and service was amicable. The restaurant has an alfresco area for those who prefer to dine outdoors. The number of Siglap dwellers frequenting the restaurant was a testament to the finesse and quality of the food. Being an ‘Eastie’ (one who resides in the East), I was happy to try out another restaurant in the East.

Hearty homemade tomato soup

For starters, I had the hearty homemade tomato soup accompanied with crispy garlic bread and meatballs served with amatriciana sauce. The tomato soup was well presented with a drizzle of fresh cream and parsley on top. The wholesome soup was also prepared using fresh tomatoes, resulting in a robust taste and creamy consistency. When accompanied with garlic bread, it was simply lovely. The meatballs were tangy and appetising and helped to prepare my taste buds for the main course.

Lingine Frutti di Mare

For the main course, I had the linguine with frutti di mare sauce. This was expertly executed by Chef Aloysius who created the sauce by blending prawn stock with tomato purée. He uses plum tomatoes as they are sweeter and juicier. The sauce was rich and tantalising and was accentuated with the sweet succulence of the seafood. The pasta was also perfectly cooked till it was al dente and the bouncy, chewy texture made this a winning dish.

Big Breakfast

My husband had the Big Breakfast – a simple dish which was equally satisfying. It was served with mouth-watering scrambled eggs on wholemeal toast, bacon, chipolata, grilled tomatoes, sautéed mushrooms and hash brown. This nutritious and delicious meal gives you your energy boost for the day.

Triple Chocolate Fondant

The signature triple chocolate fondant was deliciously rich, sinfully decadent and absolutely divine. What was unique about this dessert was the crumbly crust skilfully prepared using breadcrumbs and peanuts. It was generously filled with a warm, creamy dark chocolate ganache that flowed from the centre.

Chocolate sauce oozing out from the Triple Chocolate Fondant

When you bite into it, the luscious flavours permeate your taste buds, sending you to seventh heaven. This awesome dessert is a chocolate lover’s dream come true.

Overall, dining at Mezza on Nine was a delightful experience. Each dish was balanced with the right amount of textures and flavours. The relaxing and understated ambience makes it the perfect place to unwind and indulge in good food.  We will definitely be going back to try other dishes.
