True to its name, Z’en is a contemporary restaurant that aims to bring diners to a tranquil, peaceful state. Reflecting this philosophy in its food culture, Executive Chef, Masashi Yasui who hails from Kyoto combines the traditional with the modern to create the restaurant’s signature dishes.
The décor of the restaurant is minimalistic with earthy tones, making one feel instantly at home. Z’en has a main dining hall with high ceilings, a charming alfresco area and exclusive private rooms on the upper floors.
The private room
Service is prompt, efficient and amiable and the team has excellent product knowledge. Z’en offers the best Japanese à la carte buffet I have tried so far. Although the items are traditional, there is a touch of modernity in the taste and the presentation.
The quality is consistent and all the dishes on the menu are of premium quality. Start your meal with refreshing tomato salad and silky cold tofu.
Salmon and Tuna sashimi
The sashimi and sushi are very fresh and you can watch the chefs prepare them à la minute.
Aburi salmon sushi
Soft shell crab maki
The aburi salmon sushi is extremely tender and melts readily in my mouth. Another favourite is the soft shell crab maki as the crispy crab gives it the crunchy texture and every bite is gratifying.
Another satisfying item is the crab croquette, the skin is deep-fried to perfection while the interior is creamy and tasty.
The tempura batter is crispy, light and fluffy, while the prawns are succulent.
Meat lovers will be impressed with the sirloin steak and the beef tenderloin cubes. Both are well seasoned and are juicy and flavourful.
Beef tenderloin cubes
Beef shabu shabu
If these are still not enough to satiate your appetite, you can go for the beef shabu shabu accompanied with enoki mushrooms and vegetables.
Garlic fried rice
The garlic fried rice is also tantalising but the strong garlic taste may not appeal to those who are on a date.
Eggplant with spicy meat sauce
Another item that you must not miss is the eggplant with spicy meat sauce, it is a delightful treat for the senses.
Chocolate, vanilla, green tea ice cream and tofu cheesecake
Do remember to save some room for desserts as a good meal is not complete without sweet treats.
The crème brûlée and tofu cheese cake deserve special mentions as they are delicious without being too overpowering.
