Delectable British Fare at Bread Street Kitchen By Gordon Ramsay



Bread Street Kitchen by Gordon Ramsay is a restaurant that I have been wanting to try for the longest time. This British casual dining restaurant opened its doors in late June this year. Gordon Ramsay needs no introduction. The famous critical and straight-talking chef is known for television programmes such as Hell’s Kitchen, The F Word, Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares, MasterChef and MasterChef Junior.

The interior

Modelled after the London branch, the décor is industrial chic with black and white tiled flooring. Bread Street Kitchen occupies two floors, with a stunning view of the city skyline and the water promenade.

Bar section

 It also has an elegant bar section for people who want to see and be seen.

Assorted breads

The menu is interesting with cold and hot starters, salads, mains, grills and sides. My friend and I were served a selection of breads before our food was served.

Spicy tuna tartare

We started our meal with the spicy tuna tartare ($19), tamarind spiced chicken wings with spring onions and coriander ($18) and caesar salad ($15). I liked the tuna tartare as Gordon Ramsay’s rendition is a little unique with a mix of piquant, sweet and zesty flavours and is seasoned with chilli, garlic and sesame oil. It appeals to diners who have an inclination for slightly intense flavours. The wanton crisps which accompany the dish were also very appetising and go well with it. 

Tamarind spiced chicken wings 

The tamarind spiced chicken wings were tasty with a gentle, fresh aroma and nutty texture. However, I found them a tad too tough.

Caesar Salad

The caesar salad was refreshing and the addition of anchovies and boiled egg enhanced the taste and made it more substantial.

Roasted sea trout

For the mains, we had the roasted sea trout ($38) accompanied with spinach, topped with trout roe and drizzled with a light, savoury and velvety smooth horseradish velouté. It is a very healthy dish which does not compromise on taste and is great for fitness buffs and diners who are watching their waistline. 


Shepherd's pie

I ordered the shepherd’s pie ($38) as it is one of my favourite dishes and it is also a British classic favourite. Bread Street Kitchen’s version is delicious and is prepared with braised lamb instead of beef. The lamb was well marinated and was tender and juicy, oozing delight in each bite. The potato purée was very smooth and was topped with garlic breadcrumbs and baked to a nice golden brown hue, giving it a crispy texture. It was embellished with horseradish shavings.

Chocolate fondant with mint ice cream and salted caramel

For dessert, we had the chocolate fondant with mint ice ice cream and salted caramel which is one of the house specials. The combination was lovely and flavours were well balanced. There is also a nice range of cocktails and mocktails if you wish to indulge further.

Love Potion No 9

For the cocktails, I recommend the Love Potion No 9 ($22) which is light, crisp and refreshing with a fruity taste.

Rhythm and Blues 

If you prefer something non alcoholic, you may like to try the Rhythm and Blues ($11) -a concoction of mango and blueberries with soft hints of salt and pepper and fresh basil or the Summer Halia ($11) – traditional iced tea with a twist of fresh ginger and raspberries.

Overall, the dining experience was good, ingredients were fresh and the taste was above average for most of the items. However, our expectations were raised as we expected more from Gordon Ramsay. The pricing and portions were also a little inconsistent. Despite the shortcomings, we would still recommend going back to try the other items on the menu.
